egg in bottle

There is perhaps no more dramatic way of demonstrating the effects of air pressure than this stunt of putting a hard-boiled egg into a glass bottle and getting it out intact. Remove the shell, stand the egg on top of the bottle, and challenge your friends to push it inside the bottle. Since the air in the bottle has no outlet, it will firmly resist any pressure on the egg. You can show how it can be done by dropping a burning match into the bottle just before you put the egg on the top. When the flames go out it will make the egg slowly fall through the bottle. The way to get the egg out of the bottle is to put your lips on the top of the bottle and use your mouth as a vacuum and suck up the egg so you can get out of the bottle.

The reason this works is because when the match goes out the air inside the bottle is like a vacuum and it pulls the egg down to the bottom of the bottle
