Cleaning Copper Pennies
This experiment is called Cleaning Copper Pennies. The reason I did this experiment is because I thought it would be fun. The first thing I did was get a cup and mixed baking soda, salt, and white vinegar. I took three dirty pennies and dropped them in the solution. After a few minutes of soaking, I took the pennies out and they turned out shinny.
The reason this worked was because the vinegar and salt dissolves the copper oxide which makes it easier for the copper atoms to join the oxygen in the air and the chlorine in the salt. When the pennies are not rinsed, this allows the chemical reaction to occur to make them shinny.
