The reason i chose this experiment is because I felt it would be neat to see how this is close to how lava lamps are.
The reason why this experiment worked is because, oil is lighter than water and it floats on top of the water. The salt is heavier and will sink, taking down some oil. When the salt dissolves, the oil will come to the top of the water again.
